The Acreage is an unincorporated Palm Beach community which has experienced significant growth in its 25 years to around 39,000 people. The community was in some ways serene, backyard wells for water, little commercial development, room to expand and grow.
However, just this year, a cancer cluster has been identified in this area. Testing has not yet identified a cause of the cluster. Many feel that the pesticides once used on orange trees in the area or degreasing agents that have been used by the nearby Pratt & Whitney aircraft engine plant could be to blame. In April of 1985, it was discovered that at least 2,000 gallons of partially treated sewage had been illegally dumped in this area.
An investigation into land records has shown that the land at issue has changed hands over 40 times, leaving lots of questions about how the land was used by all of its owners. Residents continued to report garbage being dumped including abandoned cars. No records were kept of the complaints or how/if they were resolved.
Florida seeks out companies to move operations into their state and to further develop their agriculture. This comes with environmental risks, some of which may have contributed to or caused this current cancer cluster. The community is now seeking federal money for testing, well into the six-figures has already been spent
